I passed some teenagers on the street in San Mateo . and every other word they used was "F" this, "F" that .... F F F F F ! Probably 49 times within 60 seconds. Their foul language was so repulsive to all within hearing range and they couldn't have cared less. Unfortunately that whole group will probably never amount to much or contribute positively to society. What a waste !!!

I'm a teacher by vocation and a science teacher by choice. I teach middle school in a low income minority city in Anywhere, California. I find it hard to believe that your average teenager can carry on an intelligible conversation for one minute in the presence of an adult, much less carry on one in which the "f" (notice the lower-case) word is used entirely as a verb denoting the sexual act. I personally do not use this word and frown when someone chooses to use it around me, but it never ceases to amaze how much power it wields. Why do we become offended by words that are only meant to produce a response from us? Perhaps it is because we do believe that those who use them have power over us? We live in a society where sex and violence sells. If an adolescent wants to have the respect of peers they must embody the norms and values of the culture to which they identify and eschew those they don't. Our society teaches that power is attributed to those able to recognize how their behavior influences others and then use that power as a self-serving means. Those who influence with vulgarity use power as it exists at the lowest level. Here it is used as a weapon against those who are recognized as having less power, and as a form of manipulation to control their feelings and behavior. (See next post for complete text)

In my opinion, the highest understanding of power, and, therefore, its proper use lies not in the use of power to serve oneself but in the use of power as it serves others. If knowledge is power and true knowledge is true power, we owe it to ourselves and to the rest of the world to understand what motivates those who are not as far along the road as we and to serve them by nurturing their growth and betterment so that they too may wield power in the proper context. Perhaps the greater use of power is to say hello and to simply enquire how they are doing. Once we reveal our intent and concern to those around us they in turn reveal who they are to us. Once we choose to understand another we, too, open our hearts and, yes, risk showing who we really are. Nothing worth having comes without risk, but true understanding of others and, ultimately, ourselves can only proceed from a stance of power; that stance which seeks to understand and teach. Every incident is a moment to learn who we are.
May God bless and keep you always and may you discover the true power that lies within.
Sincerely, Bryan

Hey Bryan, that was great. You're right. We teach each other that we have no power to create our own lives, and then wonder why our young ones have a need to find unacceptable means of empowering themselves.

When they only own one tool it's the only tool they will use. Sad that someone did not provide these teens with additional tools. I wonder what other tools/skills they lack.

I once new a man around 35 years old that in every sentence he had to use the "F" word. I just hated talking to him.

I will be the first to admit I have been known to let the
"f" word fly. When I was younger quite a bit too. Now that I am older I tend to use it at more precise and thoughful times. It is disparaging seeing our youth using these kinds of words, but this very blog shows evidence that people think it is silly and the youth pick up on this. The smart ones use the word less and the not so smart ones stay at the bottom of the pile.

Love is the most important 'thing' to learn and love must be unconditional or it is not love at all. You may not like the way someone responds to you so at least smile and go elsewhere. It is valuable to practice the golden rule with everyone you meet and will benefit you in ways that surprise you...well most of the time. we are all one human family on Earth. Why not be the most loving brother or sister you can be. Hugs cost nothing and may be just what someone else needs after a difficult day.Compassion is being able to put yourself in the other persons shoes, even if they stink and treat them like you'd like to be treated.
None of us have it altogether but together we have it all. ANon
