If there's anything good to be learned from Katrina's fury it's that we all need to make our OWN disaster plan for survival. It's obvious from what we've seen in New Orleans and LA that individuals need to be prepared with their own supply of water and food for at least 3 days. So get a backpack, fill it with bottles of water, protein bars, a flashlight, batteries, and any necessary medications. Not knowing where you'll be when disaster strikes, you might want to put a backpack in your car and one in your home. Make a plan with your loved ones so that you have a meeting place....as we saw from Katrina, cell phones didn't work. Taking these steps now, might save your life later!

YES> Being Prepared is a great motto to live by. Hopefully the poor will not totally rely on their gov't to always to take care them . People must be responsible and use common sense. God helps those who help themselves. Those poor people in New Orleans could have spared themselves much misery and loss of life had they heeded warnings to evacuate or taken the initiative go to the local authorities to see how they could be offered public transportation out of the city. If they choose to ride it out, prepare with food and water. . It was a costly lesson learned and I think we are all going to be more alert and more prepared in the years to come, because we saw what happened with poor planning .

I agree, everyone needs to do that. If you ask me, I would not have been living in New Orleans in the first place. Number one issue is picking a safe place to live.

I agree that being prepared is a good thing, but had the people affected by Katrina relied a bit more on their government, they would have begun evacuating earlier and would have been in reach of help. Being prepared means also being prepared to evacuate if necessary. To expect any city the size of New Orleans to be able to supply the aid necessary in this type of emergency is unreasonable (especially when the whole area is a disaster waiting to happen).

completely agree. My girlfriend and I were just discussing this last night and we talked about what items would be good to keep in the garage/pull together to have on hand in case of an earthquake. If something bad happened now, I would not be prepared at all.

might as well stop paying federal taxes then. "god helps those who help themselves". not sure what religion you are promoting here helen, but it seems completely contrary to modern religion. is that what jesus told the lepers? feel free to quote some obscure verse to dispute my claim. i do think people need to be prepared, but your conclusions are ridiculous helen.
