Garrett Lisi. Remember that name. He'll probably earn a real Nobel Prize in Physics in the years ahead. This guy is a Ph.D., you know a nerd, but he spends his time surfing in Hawaii and dreaming up how to reconcile Einstein's relativity physics (macro) with quantum mechanics (micro), and he's come up with this really beautiful and simple idea--that the physical universe looks exactly like a mathematical object called the E-8, a strikingly lovely object (that you can look at, if links are allowed, at: telegraph.co.uk/earth/graphics/2007/11/14/scisurf114big.gif). His theory, which is hard to grasp unless you know some physics and math, is that all those funny-sounding particles they discover in those huge atom-smashing machines, can be arranged inside this shape. If you like lovely shapes (and who doesn't?) look at the picture. And someday, I think, you'll see this surfer dude's picture with a Nobel Science Prize in hand.
