It's a tradition that comes from the old Johnny Carson Tonight Show where he used to do the same with his announcer Ed McMahon. But Ed did more in the show, so it made sense to introduce him. The gossip is that Jay doesn't like John Melendez's bits so he's phased him out and all he does now is announce the show at the top.

i was wondering for awhile about this also, john used to be on the howard stern show then got canned, now he just sits and waves when introduced by jay, he must have some good contract in place..
