Not invented in France. It was invented by Frank Marugg of Denver and patented by him in 1953. He was a violinist in the Denver Symphony Orchestra (as well as a clever inventor) and a friend of the Denver Chief of Police. He designed the first "Denver Boot" after the Police Chief there suggested they needed something to render cars immobile for those scofflaw car owners with multiple unpaid parking tickets. This device was the result, invented in Denver and first used there, hence the name.

Hi. According to answers.com, it is called the denver boot because Denver was one of the first cities to start using it. Don't be a hater! It's not Denver's fault. ;-)

Yes, it was invented in Denver. And apparently you were stupid enough to encounter one in Chicago,

The boot was actually invented and put to use first by the French. It's first use in the USA was in Denver and was called the French boot by people in Demver. When it began showing up in other cities, it became known as the Denver boot.
