Flicking through this month's Parenting magazine, many pages are (understandably) devoted to Christmas gift ideas for family members of all ages. I couldn't help but think that the Christmas gifts we tend to remember the most are the ones we DIDN'T like, not the ones that we did. I've put this topic in the 'this blows' column because even though stories about people's worst-ever Christmas gift are often humorous in hindsight, at the time the experience can be embarrassing, offensive or downright infuriating. Before I recount my experience however, I'll mention that I do think it's the thought that counts, and that I don't advocate being ungrateful - but I also love a good laugh and don't think we should ever take ourselves too seriously. The worst-ever Christmas gift I have received would have to be a DD-sized bra my grandmother gave me when I was 10. I was an early developer, and she knew that I was embarrassed about this, but she chose to make fun of me anyway - and then was surprised when I reacted badly. Her comment was "You're going to need this someday...", and the worst part is that it turned out to be true lol! My mom said that her worst-ever Christmas gift also came from my grandmother - when she got given a basket of toiletries that she had given my grandmother for Mother's Day that year. My grandmother is quite famous in our family for giving, um, shall I say, unusual gifts. One year she donated a whole lot of porcelain figurines to the local charity store...then went back 6 months later, bought most of them back and distributed them as Christmas presents. It sure gave most of us a laugh. We all knew her heart was in the right place though.
