William Bennett    Back to the homepage
In response to a caller who had suggested that the Social Security system's finances would be in a much better position if it were not for the 1973 legalization of abortion (because there would be more people paying into the system) William Bennett had this to say: "But I do know that it's true that if you wanted to reduce crime, you could, if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country and your crime rate would go down. That would be an impossibly ridiculous and morally reprehensible thing to do, but your crime rate would go down." Un-f**king-believable . . .

Scuba (10/3): That was all taken out of context (although his reference to black people was not appropriate nor needed to make the point, so I agree with you on that front). In fact, pick up a copy of "Freakonomics" and you'll see how the author's research supports the Roe v. Wade decision actually has led to a decrease in crime rates. If you think about it, it makes a ton of sense and this has nothing to do with race, so William was wrong to bring that in, otherwise he was correct in his point. (report)

DentilFlossTycoon (10/5): Hey Scuba. That IS the point about Bennett's comment. He, out of nowhere, made a link between black babies and crime. He's a biggot. (report)
missy (8/21): Black, white, pink, purple, striped or polka dotted. Abortion is wrong. There is NO justification for murder. (report)
