Why is there an oil problem if we have Geothermal?    Back to the homepage
Views: 780 Report
Recently, all the Chicken Littles have been running around proclaiming Peak Oil and the coming end of civilization and a return to the Stone Age and individual garden plots when we run out of oil, which is more-or-less happening, or it gets too expensive. Yet all around us, and especially wherever two or more tectonic plates meet, we have ready access to geothermal energy, which is free, easy to use, clean, non-polluting, and will not run out until hell freezes over (or the Earth burns to a crisp). To make geothermal electricity, as they do in Iceland and Philippines, for example, all you need is to drill a hole in the ground, drive a pipe or two down, fill the pipe with water, wait for the water to heat to a steam, and use the resulting output to generate electricity--for free, forever. Now, why is our government not pushing for very rapid turnover to geothermal electricity and instead wants dangerous nuclear power stations? And why are we still clinging to an outmoded and foul oil-based economy, when we can have a clean, sustainable geothermal-based economy instead?
