I'm not a big sports nut, but what is going on? Gone are the days of Montana, Rice and Young, yes?

Bones (10/5): but glad that alex smith is now going to be the starter. (report)
TicalBits (10/11): they suck because it's not fair to go 11 guys vs. 10. Cause everyone knows there are no tight ends in San Fran! ho ho (report)
Rexfish (11/17): It appears they played one too many games with the salary cap. The cap isn't based on what you actually spend in a year - it's based on how signing bonuses are accrued and what accounting has to be done when you cut or trade a player. For example, if you give a player a $5 million dollar signing bonus on a 5 year contract that pays $2 million a year, it counts at $3 million for five years, not $7 million the first year and $2 mill a year after. As such, the 9ers are taking a hit on salary cap for players they have traded or paid in previous years. They have no cap room, but they are paying the least amount of actual salary this year. As such, they don't have much talent around. This may continue for a few more years until their obligations are dealt with. (report)
