The Welfare State    Back to the homepage

Since when did our country start depending on the Feds for everything? Do people even know and understand the purpose and role of the government as outlined by the Constitution? Government is already too big! I saw a woman on TV the other day crying about "who's gonna pay my bills?" now that the hurricane came through! Is she serious? Who's going to pay her bills? Since when is it MY responsibility to pay someone else's bills? This is the problem with the Welfare state in America. Heck, we should just change our name to that: The Welfare States of America! I'm sorry peoples' homes got destroyed. I really am. No one wants to see their fellow Americans left homeless after something this terrible (except maybe proponents of Big Government). But shoveling mounds upon mounds of money into something like this makes little sense. The city is below sea-level. The levees are crap. The mayor doesn't give a damn. He even was recorded telling local community leaders that they were on their own if something should happen. The governor just wants to point fingers. And meanwhile, people are refusing to leave the town, looters are shooting at rescue helicopters, medical caravans are getting robbed, and all of this, (YES, ALL), could have been avoided. The hurricane almost hit last year and they were worried about the city flooding. It didn't happen, and people sat on their thumbs. People were given the opportunity to evacuate. Many stayed behind. The mayor didn't even bother worrying about people, as evidenced by the hundred or so buses left sitting in a parking lot. All that, to say this: Why is this then, the responsibility of the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT? When will people start taking responsibility for their own lives and own well-being and stop looking to others for help AND blame!?? It makes me sick!!!

hazieG (9/29): the Constitution is so dated. I mean.. this is a Constitution that didn't give women or black people the right to vote. This is the Constitution that said that a slave was worth 3/5 of a person... wow.. make that person feel good about him/herself. And this is the Constitution that thought that citizens weren't intelligent enough to vote for their own Senators. Talk about a government getting to big. As for the welfare issue. Maybe if we weren't all selfish Capitalist pigs.. we wouldn't need the government to take care of our citizens who are having trouble making it in the world. Maybe we could help them ourselves. But oh wait.. it's not YOUR job to help someone else pay her bills. That's right, I forgot. Poverty is a man-made disaster, and no one seems willing to help remedy it. The government doesn't do enough to help the poor in America. (report)
ronc99 (10/16): I agree somewhat, our system was not designed to "take care of people", so to speak. That would be socialism, and God knows we don't want that, do we? Where the government takes care of each person, feeds them when they are hungry, helps them when they are sick, gives them a warm place to sleep. Provides a low cost health care system, helps pay for the fourteen children you concieved. Provides jobs, makes sure the companies don't abuse their employees. Imagine, a governmbet that actually looks after the poor and destitute to help them on their feet. Hmm, almost sounds like Canada huh? Those socialist idiots up there, funny, that country was just voted the best place to live in the world. (report)
