Violence on TV-- leave a lasting impression on our society and future generations    Back to the homepage

As a new mom, I was appalled to learn that if your child watched 1 hr. of TV a day by the time he is 12 years old he will have seen at a min. over 2,500 mudersand violent crimes. Totally disturbing--- not even the news is okay.

unclespunkjameshughes (8/8): But violent entertainment seems to be par for the course in the US--unfortunately. It seems way more acceptable than in Europe, but show a bit of skin in the US and that's it--slap it with an NC-17. Meanwhile dozens of people die in every Gov. Arnold movie but the studios just seem to turn a blind eye as long as they meet their bottom line! (report)

Writer_B (7/27): I totally agree. Many parents do this already, but it's very important to monitor the shows that a child watches. When I was young, my mom would ask, "Is this a show for kids?" If we couldn't honestly say yes, we had to turn it off or change the channel. Once the child is old enough, I think the news is something that they *should* be watching. But how can you teach a child that violence is wrong if they've been seeing it over and over again as entertainment? (report)
Jimbo (7/27): I also agree. The constant TV violence numbs children to the reality of the pain and suffering that violence causes. Turn it off. That's not entertainment. (report)
sexydarin (7/29): I agree tv has a lot of trash on it but humans have been murderous and violent from the get go. Tv hasn't made them any more violent. Violence is part of human nature. (report)
