Tipping Taxi Cab Drivers in NYC

The taxi's in NY are very good. We all agree that they're fairly easy to get (except friday's in the rain), and the drivers don't talk your ear off. But what I want more then anything is the ability to use a metrocard type card in a taxi that I could simply slide into a machine once I enter the taxi and it would automatically add a 15% tip and charge my card at the end of the fare. I'd be so much more comfortable not having to always worry about deciding whether to round up and give a $1.50 tip on $6 fare or stiff him and give him $.50 on a $6 fare. And not having to fiddle with my money as I'm getting out of the cab and holding up traffic. I must be the only one that hates this.

Cabs will take MC/Visa by the end of this year. Some cabs already do. BUT at the insistence of the drivers TIPS will still be in cash. (Can you say tax evasion?)

Ditto, I live in San Francisco and cab drivers don't even have change sometimes. What a frickin' rip off.

But if this changed, then the Taxi drivers wouldn't be able to claim zero income every year by evading their taxes!

You are correct. I don't take cabs very often any more, but when I lived in Manhattan it was almost a daily affair. I always hated the tipping issue. I remember watching the meter hoping it would stop at a amount that would round up to an easy number after tip.

i agree. i always find myself leaping out a half a block early just to avoid having to deal with the rounding of the tip issue

I like the IDEA of having MASTER CARD OR any credit card swipes in TAXI however as for tippping,
I loathe to tip for those who are kinda of having issues with BO.
sometime they tend to be arrogant however overall I rate their service as 7 out of ten.
