On average, women reach menopause at around age 51. But the symptoms of menopause can begin as early as your late 30’s. In the November/December 2007 issue of Weight Watchers Magazine, you will find a great little article that will help you to decipher where you may be on the menopause rollercoaster. As your estrogen levels decline you may begin to experience the classic symptoms of menopause: hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, irregular periods, insomnia, loss of libido, vaginal dryness and headaches. However, the symptoms of menopause can so widely vary from woman to woman that you may not realize you are even experiencing them. You may just attribute them to your menstrual cycle. Your doctor can do a blood test to see if you have reached menopause. However, test results can be inconclusive at times. The only sure way to know if your symptoms of menopause are full fledged menopause is if you have not had a period for 12 consecutive months.
