Safeway Store in Dunkirk, MD    Back to the homepage

These comments refer to the Safeway store at 10276 Southern Maryland Boulevard, Dunkirk, MD 20754 I went to the Safeway store in Dunkirk, MD this morning (6:50 AM)Sunday, 26 April) to by some first aid supplies. After making my selection and proceeding to checkout (lane #5 with the light on), I waited a few minutes for a checker to appear. People were stocking the shelves nearby, a checker walked past me (coming to work?), but no one appeared to assist me in purchasing my selections. I said "is anyone working checkout?" A voice said "No!" Then a female Safeway employee in a long white coat and holding a pricing gun appeared from a few lanes away and started walking my way. When I said that that kind of attitude and customer service were not what I was paying for, she said she was only kidding. I asked to speak to a maneger and spoke to a young lady named Tiffany who told me that the checkers do not come to work until 7AM. The store was open before that! When I walked in a few minutes before 7, people had just checked out and were standing in the parking lot loading their purchases into coolers. The problem is simple: the workers at this store feel like they are doing us a favor rather than doing their jobs - jobs that we, the customers, pay them to do. I have shopped at this Safeway since it opened, but the customer service has been in a stee[p decline over the past three years. There is a Giant food store across the street. I prefer Safeway, but I will now try Giant and see if they can provide simple customer service. Use your data warehouse, see what my family spends in this Dunkirk store and see if I am the type of customer that you want to lose.

ming031 (6/1): I agree. I work for Safeway and know that that kind of behavior, or attitude, is not proper nor is it company policy. If you are REALLY upset fill out a customer comment, card available at the checkstands, and Safeway will get back to you - they listen and respond very well to customer complaints. If you just want to blow off steam then this seems to be the appropriate place. (report)
