Jimmy Rollins National League Most Valuable Player    Back to the homepage
Views: 622 Report
Jimmy Rollins of the Philadelphia Phillies was selected the National League’s Most Valuable Player. I have no problem with that. Jimmy Rollins is a great player and a great person. He sparked a wonderful late season run for the Phillies that allowed them to win the National League East. Rollins edged out Matt Holliday of the Colorado Rockies for National League Most Valuable Player. It was a tightly contested vote considering Holliday had a terrific season and also sparked an amazing late season run for the Rockies.

The significance of this close vote? Rollins is black, Holliday is white. And the significance of this significance? Because here is one instance where the race card cannot be played. The cynics who like to criticize baseball and its inner sanctum of media for being racist (see “Barry Bonds, vilification of”) are forced to bite their tongue on this one. Now, I’m not asking for those individuals to go away. Their vigil is welcome to continue. But for once, acknowledge the other side – the truthful side. Maybe baseball is really about good players and good people and not about the color of their skin.
