His rising numbers in the polls, especially those for the soon-to-come Iowa caucus, are bringing more and more media attention to the former Arkansas governor and current Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee. And the first things you hear about him are what a fresh, appealing candidate Mike Huckabee really is. He plays rock-and-roll bass and loves heavy metal. He tells it like it is, in a likeably folksy way. He cares about the common people. He seems like the kind of guy you could sit down and have a drink with in a roadside bar. Problem is, there's more to him that initially meets the eye or ear. The more the media looks at him, the more his troubling side will come out, and the less appealing a candidate Mike Huckabee seems. He's a Christian fundamentalist who believes strongly in creationism, and thinks the Apocalypse is likely to happen sometime soon. Such views explain his rise in the heartland polls, and show what a cunning candidate Mike Huckabee is when it comes to pitching himself to the religious right. But beyond Iowa, he could well scare more folks than he attracts with his borderline crazy views. We can only hope.
