DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT GET A BALLY'S MEMBERSHIP!    Back to the homepage
Views: 13010 Report
So, when I got laid off, I joined a gym (since I no longer would have access at my work gym). Big mistake. I did no research and didn't ask enough questions. When I joined Bally Total Fitness, I did not know (because of course they don't tell you!) that you are locked in to a three year contract! The only way you can get out of it is if you move to a place that doesn't have a Bally's within 50 miles (like you'd drive 50 miles to work out, hello?) or have a doctor's note that you can't work out. Any doctor's out there? I can't believe I got totally suckered. Now that I have a new job, I joined the work gym (which is month to month, like it should be) and I'm paying an additional $20 on top of the $50 that comes out of my checking acct. each month. If you join a gym, be sure to do the research. Ask the questions, especially about their cancellation policy. I never thought I would get suckered into paying for not wanting to work out! C'mon...my cell phone contract isn't that brutal.

Anonymous (8/10): you think thats bad?... i was mobilized and stationed out of the country and they would not stop my membership billing when i left and allow me to continue to fulfill the contract on my return. then they decided to allow for that but wanted to charge me an amount equal to the annual fee, in order to extend. bally's SUCKS! they also ignored a letter from my commander. wanna stay in shape?... join the u.s. army. again, bally's S U C K S ! (report)
redhat1226 (11/26): okay if u only read the terms and conditions you would had not gone thru this plus the terms and conditions state it within 25mile of a ballys u could cancel or if u cant work out. get a doctors note whice let me also state i work there..the thing is ur not commited to get the body u want so u wanna way out plus ballys has the best price do the research note if u deciedeing to join do at a bally sports club and all u had to do is fax a doctors note say u was in no contiditions to work out. plus ur ass is probally jewish u cheap fuck.. lol guys dont listen to this dum ass lol, (report)
YOUSUCK (2/23): So besides the fact that you put YOUR INITIALS next to a spot on the CONTRACT that states "36 payments of _____" and the fact that you signed on a line that in BOLD PRINT states " I acknowledge this is a contract" you were unaware that it was in fact a contract?! Oh yeah, and why were you spending money when you were out of a job? How is your new membership at work doin? If a gym in your workplace worked, your entire company would be RIPPED! You go to work to work, home to relax and a gym to work out! Thats why it works! Stop being lazy and blaming others for your mistakes - get off the "Health Clubs are rip offs" band wagon! (report)
DOLPHINSBLUE (2/26): HEY IF YOU WANT TO CANCEL YOUR BALLY'S CONTRACT, GET SOMEONE TO TELL THE STAFF THAT A FAMILY MEMBER IS USING YOUR CARD AND HEY EVEN LET THEM USE YOUR CARD. I DIDN'T BUT THE SEEM TO THINK THAT MY MOM WAS USING MY CARD AND CANCELLED MY CONTRACT WHEN IN REALLY SHE WAS USING GUEST PASS AFTER GUEST PASS TO GET IN AND SOMETIMES JUST GOING IN. ANYWAY LET THE FAMILY USE THE CARD AND YOU'LL LOOSE YOUR CONTRACT LIKE YOU ARE TRYING TO DO.. IT WORKS, THEY LIE AND THEY SUCK. (report)
bossdesk (8/13): i was in the fitness biz for 15 years even owning my own clubs.......even tho i had all of that brain power about the industry i still got suckered......i think the only way i can cancel is to kill myself!!! they are thieves (report)
Anonymous (2/24): We own our membership. Owning a membership does NOTHING. Bally is nothing but a shit pile of ass hole failure. Fuck 'em. (report)
Anonymous (11/13): I used to work at a Bally's in Ohio, and my manager told me not to care about clients and people on the fitness floor. Even at an orientation in Ohio some big huge meathead named John who is some big time regional manager said the same and it is about making money. I used to work there, I know the scoop about Bally's. Stay away from this organization. I'm working at a 10x better place and not a place where trainers have no idea what they are doing. Listen to me and don't go there. Lifetime fitness is much better! (report)

jerry_sizzzler (8/22): Maybe if you were a little "nicer" to the club manager (if you know what I mean) he'd tear up the contract. (report)
Anonymous (10/1): I've seen their site and there is a fitness center near me. i don't like the facilities much, cool gym but small pool. my alternative to the army is chronicfitness.com because I am still in school =p (report)
SDSUalumni (10/21): 24 Hour Fitness rocks.....it's not like Ballys at all. There's no 3 yr. contract. You can cancel whenever you want. (report)
Anonymous (1/4): same thing happened to me- ballys is awful (report)
uofmforever (3/23): I am in the same boat. I told them since I work out of state 310 miles from home that I wanted to pay month to month cash. Because I was a contract employee near a Ballys where work could end at any time I wanted to pay month to month. The slick gal at the counter told me I need to fill out the paper work before they are able to get me a membership card. Well low and behold I guess I just signed up for a 2 year commitment. Job is no longer in that state. I am past the 25 mile radius of a Ballys in my area. But they NOW require a Human Rescources letterhead telling me that my job is relocated. I checked the bylaws. Where did it say this? Total RIP-OFF. That included the first month sign-up of $75 an advance month I paid in cash of $80 and now a cancellation fee of $50 they are now trying to discredit my proper cancellation of their step by step to cancel. Pure BullyS Hit (report)
Anonymous (5/21): I have been in colection for 7 years on my contract. I refuse to pay. I moved to a town more than 50 miles from a Bally's and they said that because there was a gym which would accept their membership (a gym that costs 10 dolars a month and is one room of poorly maintained equiptment) that I had to continue to pay Bally's membership fee to use the sub-standard gym. I think an account in collection can only be reported for seven years. I may be wrong. We'll see. (report)
ddward2007 (6/30): I agree, I thought it would be just like getting out of my cell phone contract as well, so I allowed the upsell for the guy pushing me into signing up. Is it easy to get a dr. note? (report)
Anonymous (12/27): Read the terms and conditions?....what's the point when they won't honor it. I joined and then moved out of the country 6 months later. (so much more than 50 miles away). I told them I was moving...i supplied them with my new o/s address, my one way plane ticket and my new bills. I was told that I was still not providing enough evidence. It took hours of phone calls and waking up at all hours to catch different 'management' in a different time zone. IT WAS INFURIATING...and THEN they still went ahead and kept on charging me for MONTHS even after all of this. BALLYS SUCKS. Never give them your credit card number EVER! (report)
Anonymous (1/11): I totally agree that Bally's is horrible to work with. I also was told I could cancel, but the fine print said I missed my timeframe. They are not an upstanding organizaion to work with. I would be ashamed to be their employee. (report)
Anonymous (1/17): today the worst thing happened to me in ballys medford, ma. A rep by name andrei marina approached me in the locker room and asked me if i needed a massage. I told him I was not gay, but he tried to sexually molest me. I complained to the manager and he said gay men must be given equal rights.what kind of a place is this? (report)
Anonymous (1/18): i agree, ballys medford, ma is just so bad that it is run by a bunch of cons. I saw people selling dope out there too. this is a pathetic gym. (report)
chigivara (2/19): It seems almost impossible to cancel an account with those very unethical and moronic people at Bally total fitness. If you feel the same way or have been a victim of their unethical, unlawful practices read on. I can't afford bally's anymore and when it come to puting food on the table or going to the gym, the answer should be obvious; however, this obvious answer doesn't seem to be enough for Bally's moronic employees. Secondly, if you are angry about how bally's treated you, here is how you can cause monetary damage to them: 1. Go to google or yahoo or ask.com and search for "Bally's total fitnes" 2. On ask.com under sponsored results find an link (at the very top of the page) to bally's website and click on it, than click on one link within the website. repeat as many times as you can. 3. Search for "bally's total fitness" on google and click on the very top link in the search results (should have pink background or different color than the rest of the results) and than on one link withing bally's website. Do it as many times as you can. 4. On yahoo search for "bally's total fitness" and click on the very top link in the search results (should have blue background) after you are taken to bally's website click on one link within the website. Repeat as many times as you can, many times a day. You did it, bally total fitness pays per click on aforementioned search engines and you didn't get your money back or compensation for unfair practices; however, you did get and are getting some justice by causing tham monetary damage. Anonymous (3/17): thank you. i was totally going to get a membership. i noe know not to. thanks for rescuing me before i fell in. (report)
Anonymous (8/29): i used to be a personal trainer there and believe me bally is set up like the MOB. If you dont pay they will come looking for you and if you quit they with hold your commission checks and your regular pay checks. They fucking suck. Know they have the pussy cat dolls doing there commercials because the people that work there are a bunch of pussy's. Ecspeially that guy named Jesse Dale. (report)
Anonymous (11/5): Bally Total Fitness is a piece of garbage. Find out about the pieces of shit that are hired at Bally's: riadhhamdiisaretard.blogspot.com (report)
jbalboa (11/26): I agree; they're a scam! A few years ago I was in my early 20s and went in and talked to the consultant in Glendale, CA and told him, "I'm looking for a month-to-month deal..." and he bullshitted me and said "yeah, this is it..." and gave me the form to fill out and sign. I went for a few months and after I stopped, I realized that I was locked into a contract. The Armenian consultant lied to me and I believed him, after all, how could he lie to me if he's looking at me straight in the eyes and looks honest (mother@#$!%). I should have read the back of the long form, but it had tons of tiny print. I agree with the above dude, "my cell-phone contract isn't that brutal..." BALLYs TOTAL FITNESS IS A SCAM. Check into 24hr Fitness (No Contract there) and they have other options like; month to month or prepay. (report)
danielo_bolo (1/2): Always read the contract.. On the other hand I agree, they HAVE NOT BUSINESS ETHICS. The trainers lie to you to get you into buying a membership. I was happy with mine because I read the contract before hand BUT, the TRAINER did tell me that I could CANCEL at any time... What a liar. I already knew the contract. I have been a bally guy for 3 years now and happy... I agree the lie lie lie.. (report)
Anonymous (2/9): This is sentiment echoed by many Bally customers (victims) including myself. Being the overly trusting person that I am, I believed the club manager when he told me that I could cancel for three reasons, the third being for an "early termination fee". I assumed this fee was similar to a termination fee for services such as satellite TV, in the neighborhood of $250; expensive, but worth it if you need to get out of monthly billing. Much to my dismay, he had lied to me, and I learned that I should have read the contract in its entirety right there in front of his face. Too bad it's too late now; I can't get out of the contract without paying the "early termination fee" which is actually not an early termination fee at all, it's the sum of every unpaid month for the duration of the contract. Why is it that I can terminate my television or cell phone contract early, but if I want to cancel another non-essential, I have to pay $1500! It's simply ridiculous, and the company really should be publicly lashed for it. (report)
Anonymous (3/2): and you have to wait 40 minutes on hold to get a person to give you the run around about canceling (report)
HellyK (4/4): I hate Bally's. I joined their gym when I was 20 years old. Soon after, I joined the military and since I didn't know where I would end up being stationed, I went to the gym to cancel. The representative was such an a-hole. I couldn't believe the lack of professionalism. He gave me a hard time and finally agreed to cancel my membership. Five years later, I went to buy my first place and my mortgage officer informed me that Bally's had given me bad credit. I ended up settling for $300. I just moved and Bally's is my closest gym; regardless, I still go to a gym that is further away and I will NEVER join Bally's again. A-HOLES. (report)
tomtomtom (4/9): I'm stuck in the same situation (report)
siggi (5/28): Ballys will close down over 100 clubs in June of 2009 and possibly shut down like Circuit City. I have some friends working at Bally in Orlando which is not far from my house. Ballys bankruptcy didnt get approved by the bankruptcy judge in May of 2009. They are lying to their employees, not paying commissions out and have kept cutting because the company has only $54 million in the bank. The debtor of Bally dont even want thier money. spread the word, BALLY WILL SHUT DOWN. Dont join. They suck (report)
bigbird5553 (8/7): Bally's is a money hungry business with Poor customer service. I paid an extra $20 for a trainers visit and with leaving my phone number 5 times. Not one person called me back, and on top of it will not refund my $20 claiming they will have someone call me back after me being on the phone for 2 hours. (report)
Anonymous (8/10): Bally's blows. They make it impossible to cancel your membership. They are overpriced and the quality of the clubs is very low. (report)
Quickie (8/10): I only did a two month membership to try it out. I actually ended up paying for like 5 months and then after 3 months went in to personally cancel at the front desk.. The desk attendant stated she sent the paperwork into corporate office and that it would cancel my membership since I obligated my contract. I had paid for first and last month as well... The next month they used the last month from initially what I had paid...However, in the following month I they took out money again... I personally went into the Bally's and they gave me some bullshit number where no one answers. I went back into Bally's where the desk attendent told me that when I call press the button that add a member and you can get someone to talk to...I can't believe this is what the desk guy told me...The membership department refused to let me talk to a manager and said they would contact me within a week... Insane I tell you, BALLY'S FITNESS only want your money and could care less if they are cheating you!!!! (report)
Anonymous (9/18): This company scam the hell out of you badly Let them go to hell with those greedy money (report)
Anonymous (9/23): I agree BALLY'S SUCK... I signed on for their National Membership. How can you offer a national membership when you don't have at least 1 facility in every area. The facility I attended in the Bronx, NY... Members rarely used towels which meant, they left sweat everywhere. What made this worse was, they often ran out of paper towels, i.e, this was a sweat, germ infested nightmare. Why should I have to constantly ask management to correct this. 3rd, Bally's allows you to access your account online to upgrade your membership but doesn't allow you to cancel. You have to write a letter. Why is this you ask? Because they assume most people wouldn't have time to write them, further allowing Bally's to debit your account. Join Bally's if you like, in my opinion... BALLY'S SUCK (report)
jessicamck (10/29): I agree same thing happened to my husband and I we were told we were signing up on a month to month membership couple months later we tried to cancel bally told us we were signed up for a year contract I said no I signed up for a month to month and they said no you signed up for a month to month payment plan but on a year contract the sales man total sweet talked us the whole deal!!!
