Flicking through this month's issue of Parenting magazine recently, I came across an article featuring kids' Christmas presents for $10 and under. My First Painting was one of the products featured, and purely on principal I'm not sure My First Painting is something I'd buy for my child. My First Painting includes paint, brushes and canvas, which is handy. What isn't so good, however, is the fact that the My First Painting canvas is pre-printed with outlines to "kick-start creativity". Maybe it's the child-care worker in me coming out, but I have a very strong opinion about things like this. I believe that creativity comes from within - whether it be expressing ideas in visual form or experimenting with materials and media - not from filling in lines printed on a canvas. Don't get me wrong, for what they're worth I don't have anything against coloring in, paint-by-numbers etc - it's when they're promoted as something that will 'enhance creativity' that irks me no end. Coloring books and other products similar to My First Painting are a way for children to engage in their popular culture (cartoon characters and the like), relax and have fun - but encouraging children's creativity is another issue altogether. It's more about allowing them to express their world as they see, feel and understand it, and of course encompasses a whole lot more than painting! And while products like My First Painting encourage children to stay within the lines, going outside the proverbial lines is what true creativity is all about.
