The new MGMT Oracular Spectacular album, due in stores in January 2008 but already available on iTunes, is leading to the band being hailed as a hot new group. But just listen to a few cuts from the MGMT Oracular Spectacular album and, if you're any kind of tuned-in pop music fan, you'll probably have not too much difficulty reaching the realization that MGMT (pronounced "management") sounds a lot like they're paying tribute to, or at least heavily influenced by, the great nerd rockers They Might Be Giants. Even the name could be a tip-off, since They Might Be Giants is fondly known to its fans as TMBG. So how does the MGMT Oracular Spectacular album stand up to TMBG? You'll hear a lot of electronic fun and games; a lot of smart, wacky lyrics; a lot of what sounds like drum machines and other repetitive licks; and, admittedly, a lot of really impressive, if more than slightly nerdy, songwriting, performing, and producing. MGMT Oracular Spectacular is a must-buy even for fans who've never heard of TMBG. But when you finally buy or download it, pick up "Flood," too. It's arguably TMBG's best.

Not true at all. I think they sound more original than what was said. If anything, they have a hint of Scissor Sisters.

You're completely off... if anything its a tribute to past Flaming Lips records, which, ironically enough, was produced by David Fridmann
