The most recent issue of the Atlantic Monthly has not one but two feature stories on Presidential candidate Barack Obama, one an examination of the dynamic between his campaign and Hilary's, the other a meditation on "Barack Obama, Transformational Candidate". The first is pretty much boilerplate politica-insider stuff, but the second is interesting; it delves into the reasons Obama has struck a chord with so many people and why he has the opportunity -- at this specific time, in this specific campaign -- to do what he claims he set out to do, which is to completely change the way politics is practiced. It's a pretty convincing case, but it also ignores the last month or so of campaign dynamic in which he's been less "Barack Obama, Transformational Candidate" and more "Barack Obama, Guy Who's Trying to Beat Hilary in Iowa" -- that is, he hasn't yet capitalized on his potential. Will he? Personally, I hope so. I'm betting the Atlantic does, too, just so "Why Barack Obama Matters" doesn't get filed next to "Dewey Defeats Truman" in the "Whoops" file of American political reporting.
