Barack Obama Surging in Iowa? Whatever    Back to the homepage
Views: 1034 Report
Time Magazine Coverboy Barack Obama is, according to the Des Moines Register, ahead in the polling for the Jan. 4th Iowa Caucus. This, of course, is a huge dent in the "Hilary is Inevitable" narrative that the voters have been force-fed by the media the last few months, but it doesn't necessarily mean what people think it means. Sure, Barack Obama is ahead of both Hilary Clinton and John Edwards, but he only leads them by 3 and 5 percent respectively. Add to that the fact that Clinton has never been strong in Iowa and Edwards has out-organized everyone else, and it's anyone's game. If the media is trying to switch to a "Barack Obama is Inevitable" narrative, well, I wish them luck, but the Iowa Caucus may turn out to be unpredictable. It'll all hinge on turnout, and since a high percentage of Barack Obama's support comes from college students and young professionals -- a demographic with a notoriously poor turnout history -- it's questionable as to whether he'll win, place, or show. In their desperate bid to annoint a winner before the first vote is actually cast, Time and the rest of the media may well be setting up Barack Obama for a fall.
