My Thank You Note to Steve Jobs and Team    Back to the homepage

I sent this thank you note to Steve Jobs on Oct 16, 2008. I'm making it public today following the sad news regarding Steve's health so everyone can see what amazing things have come from this man and his amazing team. I wish Steve and his family all the best and a full recovery.

Steve & Team,

I've been meaning to spend you and your amazing team a thank you note ever since I was running along the beach listening to my iPod in 2003. I remember wanting to send you a note saying "Thank you for bringing music back into my life!" Life is so much better when you are discovering and listening to music that inspires you. iTunes plus the iPod brought so much new music happiness back into my life. Thank you.

In 2004, my grandfather suddenly passed away, he was a bigger then life figure that touch many people's lives. In just 72 hours my cousin and I scanned hundreds of photo's and built one of the most amazing iMovies that brought many to tears (the good kind of tears). I remember after showing this movie to over 200 people at the funeral that I wanted to send you and your team a thank you note again. This one would have read, "Thank you for giving an everyday guy with little movie making experience the ability to make an oscar worthy film, at least in my family's perspective." iMovie has to be the greatest software for keeping amazing memories alive.

In 2006, after iWork 06 came out I built a major sales presentation in Keynote on my personal mac vs using ppt on my work thinkpad. This was a test. The test was so successful that KeyNote became the only presentation software our sales team used for the past two years. I can't tell you how many clients would stop us in the middle of our presentation to say, "Wow, this is cool, what program is this?" For a growing startup, to get this extra little buzz and excitement from a $80 piece of software is incredible. "Thank you for giving us an alternative to PPT, and for making it so powerful and so easy to apply your internal creative genius. I just think better when building in KeyNote vs PPT, it just seems to flow so much better using gray gradient background and no bullets"

In 2007 I bought an iPhone just after they were released. The attention to detail on this device is so appreciated. It just works the way you wish it could work, all of it. Thank you for that and thank you for giving me google everywhere I go. I'm a bit of a weather junkie and sitting on the chair lift at Squaw Valley and bringing up the dopplar 600 radar real time to pin point when the snow will stop is unbelievable. Thank you.

Later in 2007 I decided to make the leap to a Black MacBook as my primary work computer. I was spending way to much time booting and rebooting my thinkpad every time I undocked the laptop. I started out using parallels on my mac and the increase in productivity I experienced was amazing. I found myself bringing my macbook to every meeting to take notes ( i found a cool mac notes application called mynotes) and no longer needing to travel with two computers, one for work, and one for Keynote and personal stuff. After 6 months using parallels I decided to make an even bigger leap and bought Microsoft Office 2008 and went 100% mac for work. It was like having your company car upgraded from a pontiac to a BMW. Again the attention to detail is what drove the increase in productivity. Simple open the lid and the computer was instantly on. This just didn't happen on my PC, or any PC I've ever used.

In 2008, I joined Apple's 1:1 program (apple school as I call it) and I thoroughly enjoy my hour long sessions. I've almost mastered iWeb, built www.presidio10.com in iWeb for a charity I'm a member of, and have also figured out a system for file organization, finally. Thank you for making it so easy to sit down 1:1 with with friendly, happy, and very smart apple folks.

I can go on and on, but I wanted to share these very specific moments with you when I meant to send a thank you note. I can't think of any other product that has impacted me on such a level that I've wanted to send a personal thank you note.

Keep up the great work and thanks for doing all that you do.

Best, Jim
