What a loss that Kurt Cobain snuffed himself at the tender age of just 27 years. The just-released Nirvana Unplugged DVD drives that point home again and again and again. Establishing their rock cred through the MTV show, Cobain and his band mates performed mostly songs of theirs that weren't obvious hits, and they added such gems as a brilliant, haunting cover of Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World." What the Nirvana Unplugged DVD makes very clear is that Cobain never sold the world or sold out himself. His performance throughout is brilliant, talented, raw, and real. You can see the guy is suffering inside, and he manages to mingle that pain with every note he plays and every word he sings. It's a shame that channeling his pain through performance wasn't enough to relieve what he was going through. Yes, it's sometimes hard to watch and enjoy the Nirvana Unplugged DVD while knowing that less than four months later Cobain would be found dead of a heroin overdose and a gunshot wound to the head. Whatever really happened, what a waste it was, as the heartbreaking, brilliant Nirvana Unplugged DVD demonstrates.
