You might have heard of Newton Faulkner. He's come out of nowhere into suddenly being rather famous even managing to reach number 1 in the UK album charts before most people I talked to had actually heard of him. That's what a dedicated fanbase can do for you remember that, aspiring singer-songwriters! But is he any good? His brand of laid back funky-folky acoustic pop certainly doesn't sound new in fact, he attended the ACM, so chances are he knows how to craft a pop song.
But is that a bad thing? Should we ignore Newton Faulkner just because he might have written a song with the charts in mind? I say no. Just because it's carefully written doesn't mean any old person could have written it, and it's that spark of Newton in it that makes it what it is. The album title is Hand Built By Robots, and at times that may be what it sounds like. But that doesn't stop it being well built, and having listened to Newton Faulkner I can forgive him, because it's just so damn good. I wish him the best of success with his future albums, and if you're looking for some laid back acoustic music in the style of Jack Johnson, Ben Harper or the John Butler Trio, then look no further.
