I read something recently about how babies communicate with their parents, and this got me thinking about role-modelling communication with our children, and the messages this can convey. It's just so true that children speak what they hear. My next door neighbors are shocking. Every second word that comes out of their mouths is a swear word, yet they are quick to scream at their young children when they hear them swearing. What do they expect, when their children don't know any better? In fact, not only are they teaching their children that it's OK to have a gutter-mouth, but that it's OK to have double-standards. Having said that, role-modelling communication isn't just about swearing either. The amount of respect and courtesy we have for other people, and for ourselves, is reflected in how we communicate with them. In this vein, children can learn an awful lot about treating others with courtesy and kindness just from parents role-modelling communication in positive and respectful ways.
