It's too late to sue, but at least I can warn others (maybe). I went to a neurosurgeon (stupid move on my part) right off the bat when something was wrong with my back. Turned out to be a herniated disc. This neurosurgeon who was listed in "Best Doctors in America" (HA!) said I could "wait 2 weeks to see if it gets better then have surgery if it doesn't--or if I couldn't stand the pain any longer have the surgery now." Didn't mention any of the side effects or risks, which are well documented: pain from scar tissue adhering to the nerve, rapid disc deterioration in the years after surgery, instability caused by removal of bone & ligament (which he didn't tell me he'd be removing!!!). He did tell me "it could herniate again" but didn't tell me it was MUCH MORE likely to herniate again if I had surgery. Dummy me, I had surgery right off the bat. Despite an initial good outcome, have nothing but problems from these WELL-KNOWN long-term side effects in the years since. Come to find out later that STANDARD accepted medical practice is to almost never go for immediate surgery and to wait a minimum of 6-8 weeks before doing surgery--many say 3 months. At least 80% (some say more) completely recover WITHOUT surgery! That guy did a lot of unnecessary surgeries using HIS guidelines, and made a ton of money off of our misery. But conveniently, the problems are long-term and don't show up in the narrow window of time Alabama gives to sue. I don't want money anyway, except to cover all my medical bills from this--I want this guy disciplined and people of Mobile, Alabama, to beware if this loose knife is still doing his thing. And anyone with a herniated disc, BEWARE of anyone who wants to do a microdiscectomy before giving you tons of time to heal on your own. Ask lots of questions, and make sure you're in total permanent misery first--you could end up worse if you're not a 9 or 10 on the pain scale already!

Bopper (2/17): Sorry to hear that. What's the doctors name, that way people know to stay away from them, or if someone googles the doc's name, your post will come up warning the potential patient. Hope you get better. (report)
Anonymous (8/16): I work in a recovery room and see doctors every shift I work that I would't let touch me or my family. More info should be available on doctors and their reputations. As a nurse, I take care of the patient after surgery and monitor for any complications and document when I notify an MD of a problem and they do nothing. (report)
Anonymous (4/9): It would be helpful if you could give a name so we can avoid the same fate. (report)
