Walking a Mile in Her Shoes - A Tribute To My Mother    Back to the homepage
Views: 994 Report
My mother arrived this afternoon from overseas for a three-week visit, and was greeted by her twin grandchildren beaming from ear to ear. I am a stay-at-home father of two-year-old twin boys, and can finally appreciate all that my mother did for my siblings and me. I care for the boys 24/7, and my wife holds the corporate job. From diapering to bathing, cooking to cleaning, consoling to refereeing, the day is full of important but mundane tasks. This is a far cry from my professional career. As I change the umpteenth diaper, and think of what I could be doing with my advanced degree, my son says “Tooo taight!” I loosen his diaper. He smiles, and his brother hugs my leg. Thank you Mom, I owe you everything.

cstraw (10/12): Awesome post. You're a great writer. something you did in a previous life? you should write a book about what its like being a stay at home dad with two twin boys. I bet you have hilarious stories. (report)
Scuba (10/12): Nice work and a very honorable and important job! (report)
LHU (10/13): Thank you cstraw & Scuba. The next time I am up at 4 am with sick toddlers I will remember your words of encouragement. Thank you again. P.S. I enjoy your postings as well, they provide insight and amusement after a mind-numbing day. Keep me honest. (report)
UESGal (10/13): Wow. Your boys are lucky to have such a caring, loving father, especially one secure enough to be a stay at home dad, man enough to admit that it's actually tough!! On a light note, have you heard the country song "Mr. Mom"? If not, you've got to track it down, I have a feeling you will LOVE it!! Keep up the good work and remember, you are doing the MOST important job in the world! (report)
TicalBits (10/14): man, my dream job. I need a sugar momma. (report)
LHU (10/14): TicalBits, the grass is always greener on the other side. My stressful corporate job was EASY compared to caring for twins. If I was lounging around a pool with servants, a half-dozen nannies, and only had to deal with the kids when they were fun, then I would call my wife a sugar momma. What I have learned in the short time I have been Mr. Mom - parenting is an on-call 24/7/365 lifelong marathon. From the 25+ feedings and 34 diapers a day (yes - a day. Note: each feeding takes +/- 45min.) during their first months of life, to the 300+ diapers a month now with the occasional blow-out poopie, the 3 meals and 2 snacks (Example: Typical breakfast- oatmeal with raisins, scrambled eggs with cheese and tomatoes, yoghurt with strawberries, a pear or apple, and of course milk. Typical lunch: Whole wheat pasta with tofu, broccoli, green beans, peas, and carrots covered with alfredo sauce and parmigiana, avocado with lemon, tomato, a banana and milk or 50% juice/50% seltzer water. Typical dinner: Chicken leg, butternut squash, steamed cauliflower and broccoli, mushrooms, peas and corn, Asian pear, yoghurt with cherries (frozen organic), and of course water or milk.), and the wash… And I haven’t even mentioned the time you spend ever vigilant keeping the boys safe. I’m tired, and I still have the rest of my life to run this marathon. (report)
