Mega-Bomb tested by Russia    Back to the homepage
Views: 1226 Report
Things that go boom just got a bit bigger with the test of a mega-bomb by Russia in September. The bomb, which is the largest ever non-nuclear weapon, is an eight-ton fuel-air explosive capable of destroying a large area of land. The fuel air explosive is four-times as powerful as the United States' Massive Ordinance Air Blast. Tests have confirmed that the mega-bomb releases a cloud of explosive materials in the fuel-air blast, which creates sustainable shock waves that go outward for up to 990 feet. The mega-bomb flattened buildings in seconds during the test. Military experts call the fuel air bomb a specialty weapon, excellent at collapsing tunnels, however there are drawbacks to the device. The weapon is difficult to build, and the key ingredients, magnesium and isopropyl, are high unstable, giving the mega-bomb a short shelf live. Experts worry that the Russians may have found a method to keep the fuel air mega-bomb sustainable, creating a devastating new weapon on the battlefield that does not have the draw back of radioactive fall-out.
