It's 20 years since U2's Joshua Tree album first burst onto the music scene. The deluxe new anniversary edition--which includes a remastered CD; a treasure trove of B sides and alternative takes; and a new DVD containing a documentary on the making of the album, performance footage, and a heretofore unreleased video for "Red Hill Mining Town"--firmly sets U2's Joshua Tree as a landmark of music history. To be honest, I can only take Bono in small doses, finding his constant crusading to be grating on the nerves and his overall persona to be as self-aggrandizing and preening as you'd expect from someone whose performing name reputedly derives from the Italian for "beautiful voice." Gimme a break. But you can't argue with the majesty of the music, and U2's Joshua Tree has gorgeous tunes to spare, not least the haunting "Where the Streets Have No Name." Even if you already have a copy of U2's Joshua Tree, you've just got to grab a copy of this new set to savor the whole thing even more.
