If you're a devotee of American Idol, as most people are, then the first Jordin Sparks album, from 2007's TV contest winner, won't disappoint you. The team behind the appealing teen has pulled together some top-notch pros for this first effort, including producers who've worked with recording artists including Britney Spears, Beyonce, and even a veteran of High School Musical and Hannah Montana! That results in every single track on the Jordin Sparks album, which is titled with the singer's name alone, sounding highly polished and sparklingly professional. The assorted input, however, also unfortunately means that the Jordin Sparks album can also at times feel overly eclectic. At one moment, she sounds sweet and soulful on a track like "Virginia is for Lovers." The next, on a track like "Shy Boy," her voice comes off sounding electronically modified, as Britney so often does. Still, cut for cut, it's all very entertaining and enjoyable. It will just be interesting to watch her mature and take more creative control, turning the next Jordin Sparks album into more of a coherent personal statement.
