Let me start out by admitting that I'm no great fan of rap. But every once in a while, a rap album will catch my fancy, and it does that by showing talent and originality that rises above the usual crap of rap. That's what happens in the new Jay-Z album "American Gangster." Inspired by but not the soundtrack to the Denzel Washington movie of the same name, this new Jay-Z album marks a return to the rapper's roots. But that doesn't mean that it's a collection of angry lyrics shouted out against repetitive scratching. Steeped in soul and rhythm-and-blues sounds, including samples from greats like Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye, the new Jay-Z album pays respect to black music's roots. The lyrics are damn intelligent, too, showing that the guy thinks about issues and digs into his subjects for deeper answers. And sometimes the subject is himself and his own ghetto background, which he makes an occasion for tough introspection. Standouts on the new Jay-Z album include "Fallin'," "Sweet," and "Hello Brooklyn." But every track deserves a good listen.
