Today's Chicago Sun-Times has an op-ed piece by Jesse Jackson in which he takes the current crop of Democratic Presidential candidates to task for ignoring the "catastrophic crisis that engulfs the African-American community." There are a couple of possible responses to this accusation: First, one could point out that Jesse Jackson is ignoring the programs and proposals that each candidate's campaign has put out there to combat poverty and urban violence. Yes, Jesse, said proposals exist -- you just have to look for them. Second, one could point out that Jesse Jackson is ignoring the fact that the two earliest primary states are Iowa and New Hampshire -- neither of them states where African-American issues are exactly a top concern.
Third, one could point out that it's not African-American issues that are being ignored; it's Jesse Jackson himself. And that's the real problem in his eyes.
Sigh. I used to be a fan, once upon a time. But if there's one thing Jesse Jackson has proven over the decades, it's that his strength is calling attention to the problem -- not solving it. His current cries of "Hey! Pay attention to me!" are just kind of sad.
