Interstate 5 - LA to SF    Back to the homepage

Driving from LA to SF on the 5 freeway can be so frustrating. The left lane is for passing and the right lane is for slower drivers. So what's up with people staying in the left lane going 55 miles and hour and not moving over when they can clearly see cars lining up behind them wanting to pass them. How inconsiderate!

Anonymous (7/24): You are not alone as you bemoan inconsiderate drivers traveling slowly in the passing lane. We have our share of those drivers here in Massachusetts on the Massachusetts Turnpike, Route 495 and Route 128, as well as on most of the other major highways. I also travel in Connecticut often and that state has its share of slow drivers creating an obstacle in the passing lane. (report)
NAS (7/24): I'm going to lump all my responses to driver problems right here. Most California freeways are clogged beyond any reason. There are way too many people and vehicles here. I've waited for our "leaders" to take control but looks like we'll have to do the job. During the 60's S.Bar. County was being sacrificed by the developers to the Dollar God. In the '70's regulations were enacted to slow/stop the hemorraging...the developers are at it again. Time to write the editors, city council, supervisors, etc. Greed causes these egomaniacs to fill every square foot with a house, apartment, condo, office building, or factory. This must stop! Secondly, all those extra drivers are getting incredibly rude and dangerous. Generally, a pandemic of I,Me,My-itis is rearing it's ugly head. Not to slam anybody, but seems to be young-ish people in SUV's. Feeling indestructible, perhaps? When the problem is exposed, the solution will bring balance. Call me an idealist, but I think there are enough great people around who care to make things better. Check out the *Californiacoastline.org* site to see aerial images from '70's and the same place around 2002. Anywhere along coast. Sobering. The only place left is the ocean and some sand. (report)
DaliMama (7/25): one of my pet peeves...I agree. (report)
Anonymous (7/25): Wisconsin must have some kind of law that says you can drive slowly in the left lane. You can see Wisconsin license plates all over the country holding up traffic in the left lanes. (report)
ew6050 (7/25): I agree this blows but worse are the people that are tired of waiting and then race up the right hand lane and then cut over right in front of you. So selfish as it will kill someone some day, if it already hasn't. (report)
CaptAmerica (8/31): Plan your drive to leave LA around 3:30am. You won't have a problem (provided there's no Tooley Fog) (report)
