BMW Inside Rear Tire Wear    Back to the homepage
Views: 5030 Report
BMW 335i Cab with 19" Bridgestone RFT's Tire Failure. Both rear tires developed deep and dangerous 3/8" wide grooves on inside edge after 15,000 KMS. (Remaining surface showed little tread wear). - BMW first suggested it was likely due to driving with top down as it put extra weight in trunk and over rear wheels!! - Bridgestone claimed tires were under inflated, however pressure maintained at 38 psi. - The fix was replacing both tires, checking alignment, and running 48 psi. Cost - $2,000 CDN. **** NEW TIRES NOW FAILING EXACTLY THE SAME WAY just six weeks and 5,000KMS later. BMW has kept the car in their shop for more than 2 weeks trying to determine the root cause of failure. The dealer says tires constructed with soft compound to provide high performance and owners should NOT EXPECT more than 20,000 KMS. LIFE &. A GOOD STORY FOR SHOWROOM SALES? Are you also having trouble with BMW and BRIDGESTONE delivering on their promises of SAFETY and QUALITY, not to mention expecting REASONABLE DURABILITY of their product? CAVEAT EMPTOR - BUYER BEWARE.

Bullman (12/8): Having the same problem with my 2008 528i.4 sets of tires in 62000 miles. BMW says all German cars do this which is not really true. Am getting ready to trade it in for a new Toyota SUV. (report)

jltexas (9/13): I have a 2003 BMW Z4. First set of Bridgestone RFT's had excessive rear tire wear on lower edge of side wall. The second set (Bridgestone RE050A RFT) has the same problem (20KMS). Not under inflated, driven with top down 98% of time. (report)
Darwin (9/26): BMWs are poorly engineered and the cars are frought with problems for owners including high maintenance costs. I have a 2001 530i that has had a multitude of problems; rear tire wear has always been excessive on the inside edges of both rear tires. They always tell you that it is designed that way for improved traction; what a load of crap - BMW owners have spent millions of dollars on tire replacement. I'll never buy another BMW. It's fun to drive but is really poorly engineered and unreliable. (report)

mutsnuts (1/12): i am having excessive rear tyre wear i have rep from bmw down to see car he has advised me that the fault is with the bridgestone tyre and there is a new spec now avalable so i contacted brigestone and thay say there is a new spec but it is not the compleat ansear thay say it is to do with the way the e 92 loads up the in side of the rim to exses so would apper to be a bmw problem opps (report)
mrscartwright (4/10): BMW's are expensive because they cost a lot to repair. The tires were an issue with my 2006 model, but the replacement of the transmission within 6k was worse. Not built to last, but built to fall apart. Unless you like sitting at the dealer for repairs, get rid of this car before its unsafe conditions get rid of you. (report)
Anonymous (5/13): My car (330 D conv 2009) has exactly the same problem, done 13000 miles, my last 330d saloon did 30,000, so there`s something definately wrong. I`m taking my car in to BMW today so let`s see what they say !!! (report)
Anonymous (10/20): 10/20/2010 - I have a 2007 BMW 335 w/o Sport option which I purchased new in Nov 07. My OEMS were the pathetic noisey Bridgestone Potenza OEM's. After about 2000 miles two of the tires developed bulges on the sidewalls. At the time I didn't realize that this was a common problem and BMW would have replaced them before 10K miles. After they wore out, I replaced them with the OEM Continentals. They are sooooooo much quieter. After about 4000 miles, I noticed a hole in the sidewalls and of course the pre-programmed dealer told me that I must have a hit a pothole as he got $300 out of me for a replacement! BMW please pay attention to your customers. We expect and demand better! My lease expires soon and for the first time I'm seriously considering an Audi!!! (report)
bimtech (10/27): there are definitely issues with tire wear on certain models of bmw, specifically the 335i cabriolet and E70 X5. other models don't really show unusual tire wear unless they are out of alignment, tire pressure is set improperly, or are being driven "spiritedly". ANY vehicle with unusual tire wear should have alignment checked, and bmw's unofficial solution to tire wear on 335i cabriolet is to run the maximum allowable tire pressure according to the sticker on the driver's door jamb (i believe 46psi) there is no official solution as bmw does'nt believe there is an issue, also due to the fact that tire wear is a very difficult thing to have coverage for warranty, being a wear item, also because dishonest people may try to get free tires after abusive driving (i've actually seen this scenario on a few occasions, a trained eye is all that is needed to discern the telltale signs of an abused tire from normal or unusual wear) (report)
RolfDieter (10/27): I have the same problem on a Z4 35i Tire dealer told me this is an issue with this type of car when the retractable top is in the trunk and some travel luggage. He suggested to run rear tires 10% above the specified air pressure since tire thread is still good. My local BMW dealer later confirmed this. My car has 2.5 degree camber and I feel that is a major reason for this premature tire thread wear. (report)
Anonymous (11/8): My wife had the same problem with her 2000 540i and tire dealer said it was due to negative camber on rear tires which were Toyos and he said you must replace them about every 20K miles. The major concern is that the failure is almost impossible to detect without removing tire from car. I check and air these tires regularly. My 2006 M6 has the same problem with front tires (Continentals) and again it is due to a bunch of negative camber. The fronts are at least easy to read. I just switched to Michelin PS2. They told me out front to expect about 20K miles for wear. These new tires are much quieter than the old ones. (report)
Anonymous (11/10): Once again,528i BMW 2008 5 Series at 30000 lease termination and I plan on buying car the inside R rear wear was bald. Told hit a curb or alignment seems unlikey must be a problem with the design. (report)
Blinky (3/29): Possibly simple solution. It is ashamed that the auto engineers in an effort to improve mileage by cutting weight from a car have over done it. I have seen erratic inside wear on rear tires on 3 small lightweight cars. On the first after destroying 2 sets of tires and 3 alignments and balances and new shocks, I finally found the fix. Throw 2 bags of rocks in the trunk. Never had the problem again in the next 250,000 miles. 80-150 lbs should do it. I actually poured concrete around the spare. LOL, but most people refuse to believe that the car was designed such that the back tires bounce down the road causing erratic wear. Higher tire preasure will make it worse. Think of a basketball. I never really noticed any loss in mileage. It is now happening on my forth vehicle. (report)
Anonymous (5/17): I have a 2006 750LI. Same problem. It eats the inside of rear tires. The outer edge looks good when the inside is dangerously worn. As tires wear the road noise gets worse. I am not running bridgestone, so the problem must be with the car design. (report)
