Illiterate Brits    Back to the homepage

For all Blair's protests on how wonderful the UK become under his benign guidance, this salient point sums up the real truth: Today my wife was one of a number of parents and helpers called in to read SATS papers to year 6 students - because nearly half the year are so illiterate they couldn't read the questions. Thanks Tony. NOT!

ForYourHome (5/15): My 6 yr old son goes to an excellent primary school, ranked highly in the top 500 primary schools in the UK, and yet the curriculum is totally flawed. The very basics have been removed, instead of practicing writing so that it is legible; they spend the literacy hour discussing how to formulate a piece of literature. Phonics is another problem, this would work wonderfully if we were teaching our children Arabic, being a phonetic language, however, these rules do not apply for our diverse English language. Ah, but wait, the good news I am told is that my 6yr old has excellent research skills. Wonderful, I was thrilled to hear this, perhaps he could focus on his first thesis now, although how he would critically engage with any methodology without the ability to read is rather disconcerting, conversely, would the finished piece would acceptable in misspelled phonetic text language! Education, Education, Education was Tonys mantra, and yet one word was missing from the end, deprivation, as he has certainly deprived our children of the fundamental basic ability to read and write. www.foryourhome.co.uk (report)
