Well this has been a terrible month in the world of technology for me, first my iPod and now this. I used to have nothing to say but good things about IBM and their computers, until last week. I had taken such great care of my laptop because it is so valuable to me and because I had many important documents, all my college pictures, and over 3,000 songs on it. I turned on my Think Pad one morning and a terrible sound erupted from the hard drive. I knew right away that something was wrong. Adding insult to injury some text appeared on my screen saying, ÒOperating System not foundÓ as the ticking noise was still going on. So that day I called IBM asking them if they could fix my laptop. The technician was very helpful on the phone with me but he told me that my warranty on the computer had expired 1 month ago to the day. Now I am devastated because I have to pay $600 for the new hard drive and operating system or buy a new computer. I also have to blame myself for my bonehead move by not backing up any of my precious files, but IÕm lazy and backing up 3,000 songs and hundreds of pictures is just stupid. There is no excuse for a 3-year-old laptop to die like this.

Sounds like your technologically cursed! Ever thought of using a paper and pen and listening to an old fashioned radio?

I hate to say it, by hard drives usually don't last 3 years -- especially on laptops. Not necessarily an IBM ThinkPad issue.

You have to back up a hard drive! If you had, you would still have all your songs, your whole operating system, all your e-mails, everything. Ask yourself: how many times were you warned about this????

There may be no excuse for a 3 year old laptop to just croak but it happens. I learned my lesson a long time ago. Once you're back in operation do yourself a favor and get a portable hard drive. There are plenty out there to choose from. I have 8 years of work on each of my two notebooks (Latitude & Thinkpad.) As dependable as they've both been I don't trust either one of them as far as I could throw my car. I recently bought two Western Digital Passport 40 gig portable USB drives, now priced around $119.00 each. I know there is an 80 gig model available as well. They are super fast; my data files are backed up in seconds and they're relatively small. Good luck; I know the feeling all too well.
