The once-ridiculed quest of Mike Huckabee to become President is being ridiculed no longer, as his poll numbers are surging. Nationally he trails only Rudy "The Talking Combover" Giuliani and is essentially even with him in Iowa. This means one of two things: either voters are looking at Mike Huckabee and like what they see, or they're looking at Mike Huckabee and don't have the slightest clue what they're looking at. Huckabee, you see, is an interesting amalgamation of qualities -- a near-populist on economic issues, a right-wing conservative on social issues, a down-home, folksy "straight-talker" to those who can't understand issues. Basically, there's something there for everyone to either like or loathe. From my own perspective, Mike Huckabee's stance on immigration is sensible, his idea of a "fair tax" is ridiculous, his unpretentious folksiness is charming, his Creationism is insane...
They're calling it "Huckamania", as if Mike Huckabee is a throwback to a better time when public servants were straightforward, honest, and unpretentious. It's more like "Hickamania", though, in the sense that voters love to think that pols with accents from non-coastal states are somehow more "genuine". Here's a hint: they're not. Mike Huckabee apparently has an ethics history from his time as Governor of Arkansas that some would describe as "colorful" and others would describe as "Clintonesque". Stay tuned.
