Homeless    Back to the homepage
I feel so guilty if I see a homeless person on the street begging for money and I just walk by trying to ignore that he/she is there. So, last week I bought a sandwich and gave it to a homeless man who was begging outside of the store, and he threw it down saying he wanted money. There is no easy answer to this growing problem. If we give money aren't we just supporting their drug or alcohol addiction?

Anonymous (8/29): My dad worked for a year in Cork, in Ireland....on his way to the university each day, he walked past a knot of prostitutes, who did their usual advertising...he bought some coupons entitling the bearer to a free meal, and would try to pass them out...after a few days of this, when he was handing one to one of the ladies, another growled, "dinna be wastin your time, Mairy, it's only the fockin professor with his fockin coupons." (report)
Anonymous (8/29): Give them a job application, Not money or food. (report)
Anonymous (8/30): What a great idea, though. With enough coupons we could eradicate prostitition forever! Who among us and our pimps wouldn't prefer a free meal --or 20 of them each night -- to a wad of cash? (report)
LONESTAR (9/6): WHAT ABOUT THE ONES THAT REALLY NEED A HELPING HAND DUE TO UNCONTROLLABLE CIRCUMSTANCES, DO WE LOOK AT THOSE PEOPLE AS DRUNKS AND ADDICTS. DO IT BECAUSE ITS WHAT YOU FEEL NOT BECAUSE YOU THINK ITS RIGHT (report)
GrumpyOldFart (3/25): I say we give. Who among us can judge who is in need and for what reason? IF you give and the money is used for drugs or alcohol then at least we have given of ourselves for hopefully good reasons. I was running errands in my town once and was approached by a man that looked more than able to work...he not only asked for a few dollars for a meal but gave me a long story as to why he wasn't working at the time. I was unemployed myself at the time and also going through chemotherapy and was feeling fairly sorry for myself in my situation, I did not give him money and was angry that he asked ME for money in the first place...didn't he know what was going on in MY life? after I drove away, I truly believe that the Lord sofened my heart. I returned to the man and gave him some money. I thought that if he used the money for drinking or drugs then I at least had done what I think was the right thing to do in giving. Not a 1/2 hr later I saw that very man coming out of a nearby grocery store with a bag that obviously had food in it. He even had what I could see to be a quart of milk when he could have easily had bought beer. I don't have the answers and I'm certainly not always right...but I think if you gave to 1000 people over your life and only managed to feed one person that truly is in need... then it's worth it. Bones (8/29): I used to give money to pan handlers thinking that even if they use this money for something other than food I was adding a small bright spot to their day. I now work in an area where many homeless wander during the day and I've realized that many of them are very drunk and get angry (We've had to call the cops once when one agressively confronted an employee who works downstairs) and its a result of pan handlers fueling the cause. My advice is to give generously to charities that help the homeless vs giving money to the guy at the stop light. (report)
Anonymous (8/29): I agree with BONES. We can better help the homeless by supporting the charities that assist them vice the lone person begging on the street. (report)
Jimbo (8/29): Hey get tough voohoo, the guy that threw down the sandwich is a jerk who deserves nothing and that's exactly what I would give him. (report)
noadvertising (9/1): I usually give a buck or two to homeless people who look like they cannot work. There are a lot of elderly or physically maimed homeless people in this category. If they look young and healthy enough to work, I don't give them any money. Unfortunately the public has no way of knowing which are homeless by tragedy, or which are homeless because of laziness and addiction. (report)
Anonymous (9/5): Good deeds never go unrewarded. (report)
