As I write this, it's just after midnight Central Standard Time and the horrific holiday shopping season is officially upon us. Unofficially known as Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving is the commercial rugby scrum that kicks off the next month of frenzied holiday shopping. God help us, every one. Apparently some stores, including Toys R Us, J.C. Penney, and others, are opening even earlier than usual, desperately hoping to cash in even more than they have already on this self-induced American holiday shopping nightmare. Seriously, why do we do this? Why have we basically marked off this day as what amounts to a national holiday reserved specifically for shopping for an entirely different holiday? Why do we feel like we've only got this one single day to pile together in a sweaty mass, tackling each other in the hope of getting the last cheap leather massage recliner? The logic of our holiday shopping habits escapes me. The rest of the country can have all the holiday shopping freedom it wants to tomorrow. Myself, I'm just going to pull the covers over my head and wait for the commercial frenzy to blow over.
