HP was once famous for the "HP Way," a corporate culture with a startup spirit that allowed innovation among employees. What happened to that famous HP corporate culture? Among other things, they went through a lot of acquisitions, absorbing different companies, some with an ethos more rigid than HP's corporate culture. Recently, the giant has tried to recapture a little of the glory days through M&A. Now they are picking up highly-agile startups like Voodoo PC (Businessweek, November, 2007, p.11). But will these hip startups get lost in the staid structure of HP's corporate culture? The financials from 4Q look good for HP, with revenue up 15% from last year and operating earnings up 38% (Morningstar, Nov. 20). But the numbers don't tell the full story of HP's corporate culture. To stay ahead and innovate, the company will have to decide who it really--HP's corporate culture can only get so hip with 156,000 employees. It's a corporate giant; while it can learn from the business style of its new acquisitions, in the end, the agility of the startups will get lost in the rigidity of HP's corporate culture.
