Getting So Mad at Work you Want to Scream (or worse, cry)

I am sure this has happened to everyone, but every once in awhile something happens at work that makes you lose it - this morning I got so mad that I seriosuly didn't know whether to yell or cry. I know it's just work but considering we spend so much time here, it really does become a significant part of you. Of course, eventually you calm down, but the irritation towards some people can linger, even if you try and will it away. Wish I could just let things go easier, but I chalk that up to being female.

What happened? What made you want to cry? You left me hanging.

always a good idea to take a break, leave the office, and go get a coffee and come back. You'll feel better.

By the way, it's not about being female. It's called being human. Believe me, I'm not an expert in "work related stress ablation" by any means. I myself will often bite my tongue, smile at some imbecile whose sole purpose in life on a particular day seems to me making everyone else in the world miserable, and say "have a nice day" when under my breath I'm really saying "have a nice accident on the way home." It's totally okay to lose it, feel like you want to scream, cry, bang your head against a wall, etc. Then be very good to yourself and do whatever you have to do to let it go as quickly as possible. Letting the irritation persist serves no useful purpose (I'm sure you know that already) and it puts a terrible strain on you physically as well as mentally. Splash some cold water on your face, have a cold drink or a snack, get out in the fresh air for a minute if you can, whatever it takes. Whenever you're feeling like you want to "spit nails" try to think of things that make you happy. Near the end of my work day I think about my dog charging at me when I walk through the door, playing a nice jazz tune, relaxing and listening to a beautiful opera, etc. It takes practice but it's worth the effort. You're young and you have a long way to go.

It's worse when you work in food service. When I was an undergrad at San Diego State, I slung hash at one of the local food courts. The number of ignorant, annoying customers made me want to scream out of insanity.

I think it happens to everyone from time to time and never gets easier. Just be strong and remember that you can leave it at the office at the end of the day!

I always thought it was just because I was young that I was nearly in tears, but I guess not. I love my job and I think I am good at it, but sometimes I just get so frustrated when people make decisions I don't agree with and totally disregard my opinion. It's so hard!

I agree, work can be very difficult at times. The best idea, learn to let it roll off of you. Don't let them make you cry - toughen up - you will profit in the long run.

Anyone worth a damn at work - or anywhere - has passion. Emotion comes from passion. Better than simply being a robot that doesn't care about what they are doing or how they contribute. It's not a female thing.
