Word is spreading that Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch is on the verge of foreclosure. The erstwhile 2,800-acre rural estate of the self-proclaimed "King of Pop" may hit the auction block if he doesn't pay up on a $23-million loan on which he's defaulted. But Michael Jackson's Neverland should disappear, putting an end to the long, sad saga of accusations and out-of-court settlements. Recently, on a weekend visit to its surroundings in Southern California's Santa Ynez Valley, setting for the popular movie "Sideways," I took the 15-minute drive up a country lane near the town of Los Olivos to have a look for myself at Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch. When I got to 5225 Figueroa Road, what struck me most was that it already felt like it was shutting down. There was no name in sight, and no people either; just a secure but lonely looking gated guardhouse. The sooner it's sold and gets a makeover, and is no longer known as Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch, the better. (Sadly and ironically, there's a school bus stop and a secluded private school across the street.) Anonymity is a good thing for a place with such a pathetic history.
