Family-friendly recipes? I think not!    Back to the homepage

Am I the only one who would expect to find family-friendly recipes in Parenting magazine? Is it really that odd that I'd expect to find recipes targetting children more than adults? Judging by some of the recipes in the current issue, it would seem so! One recipe that really stuck out was the baked brie bowl. My son is a very fussy eater, and it's hard enough getting him to eat fruit and cheese at the best of times, let alone Brie and cranberries! Moroccan bean dip is another example...with chickpeas, cumin and garlic, it seems to be aimed more at adults than kids. I'm certain that I'm not alone in wanting more family-friendly recipes included in magazines such as Parenting. Recipes that are easy to prepare or, even better, can be prepared ahead of time. Recipes that contain ingredients that kids actually eat, and which adults can enjoy too. If I wanted recipes for a barbecue or a dinner party, I'd look in a recipe book or buy a cooking magazine. Parenting magazines are about making our lives as parents easier, and that includes things like recipe ideas for finger-food, fussy-eaters and the like...not exotic dips for us grown-ups! The fact of the matter is that kids enjoy simple food, and many parents prefer recipes that are simple to prepare and suitable for the whole family to enjoy. Is a parenting magazine with family-friendly recipes really too much to ask? Enough of the brie and cumin and chickpeas, Parenting...more family-friendly recipes, please!
