This was one of the best holiday entertaining ideas I've ever had, and I wanted to share it. If you want to have a holiday party, but don't want to make yourself crazy with cooking for a big crowd, just pick a single focus and stick with it. You can do heavy hors d'oeuvre and cocktails, but that's a fairly common approach. For a slightly different spin, try a dessert-only party. You can make desserts ahead of time so it's not all a last-minute rush, or have guests bring their favorites. For the best success with this holiday entertaining idea, make sure guests know it's dessert-only ahead of time so they don't come too hungry. Your diabetic friends may not think this is such a fantastic holiday entertaining idea, and people trying to lose weight will complain, so make sure to have a few healthy options like fresh fruit around. Still, I have found that the anti-sugar crowd will still show up and partake in the decaf coffee and companionship. When I did this a few years ago, I set small cardboard boxes on my dining room table and sideboard to form platforms of varying heights, then covered the whole table-box conglomeration in festive fabric. Whatever holiday entertaining ideas I choose, I'm always hoping that some day I'll learn to keep it simple and keep the focus on enjoying my guests, not bankrupting myself or cooking myself crazy!
