Drug tests!

I applied for a job on a lark, got an interview and got an offer the next day for $20K more than I'm making now. Then they tell me I have to take a drug test, despite no mention of this in the background check document I had to sign and no 'drug-free workplace' notices on their website or in their job posting. I'm a very occasional smoker, but that stuff stays in your system for up to a month. I could snort 8 lines of coke and be clean 2 days later. How fair is that?!

Employees' drug problems cost employers big money. In addition, smoking pot is an illegal activity. I don't blame the company at all!

Ummm what is wrong with this story?! Oh yeah Drugs are Illegal. You are actually at a job making at least 20K+ a year and whining about a drug test??? Umm something is not quite right

I think you might be misinformed. It is true that the drugs can stay in your system for about 1 month. IF YOU ARE A CHRONIC SMOKER!! A one time puff here and there is usually dissipated in 7 days. If I were you, I'd just quit whining about getting caught doing something illegal and stay where you are in your happy little drug induced life!! If the job is that great for you, and you say you are only an occasional smoker, why not give up the habit? Maybe it's more of a problem than you are letting on....

hmmmmmmmm drug free workplace was advertised so why apply if your not willing to be drug free...
sounds like an incredible clue to me....then again i am mostlikely brighter than anyone who could be dumb enough to apply for a job in a drug free place and be shocked/horrified they would drug test me...

Give me a break! Who wants employees who use any kind(s) of drug(s). And while marijuana may not be as dramatic as meth or cocaine, it does effect your state of consciousness - otherwise why do you think you use?? It would be a good idea to realize that there is no big umpire in the sky deciding what is fair or not - life just is. I don't find it surprising at all that a job, especially one that pays well, requires you to be drug free - they shouldn't have to even advertise that. Get in touch!

I disagree. They have every right to test you. Just because they didn't advertise it doesn't mean that a company won't test you for drugs.

Get off the drugs. Seriously, is your life so pathetic that you have to get your highs artificially? What is wrong with our generation - so embarassing to be a part of such a lazy, entitlement-driven generation. Thank God WWII happened in the 1940s bc if it happened today there is no doubt that the current crop of Americans would fail to rise to the challenge and the world would be a worse place. Would the original poster of this message be willing to storm off a landing craft onto Omaha Beach on D-Day to likely die for a greater good? Unlikely - they would probably stay home and would be smoking pot.

i think its great that a company can tell its employees what to do,,,for the good of the company...next they should screen cholesterol and body fat...we wouldnt want any porkers having a coronary on company time...furthermore,,,it isnt about the legality of pot..its about lost time and productivity...oh and skiing should also be banned...too many lost time accidents

A job doesn't have to tell you it has a mandatory drug test. Maybe you just shouldn't do drugs. I mean, if you're doing something other than sweeping the floor you might want to be able to comcentrate. But as a female I wish they'd offer hair or blood drug tests as alternatives. I hate pissing in a cup. I have a shy bladder.

They should have told you, but if you really don't smoke that often it won't stay in your system that long. Plus they have all kinds of ways to get around the test visit your local head shop and they can help

From the original poster -- OK, fine, I have to take a drug test and yes pot is illegal, but how fair is it that marijuana stays in your system for days and yet you're free of cocaine or meth -- drugs that can truly mess you up and affect job performance -- in a day or two? That's my main objection -- that marijuana, a drug more benign than alcohol, just by its chemical nature is more a problem than so-called "hard" drugs.

Not fair at ALL - I don't think they should even test for marijuana - not only because it's harmless, but because the drugs that can really screw up job performance cannot be tested. Job related drug tests are wrong - it'll be different if they figure out how to test for meth and cocaine.

This sucks. Here you go enjoying an illegal activity and these mean people actually don't want you to take drugs. I bet you could find a lawyer who would sue these bastards. I mean if you want to take drugs, drink, do whatever - that's your right. Whatever feels good you have the right and possibly duty to do it.
But guess what sucks even more. Others have rights, too. If you run one of my family members over while under the influence - I reserve the right for revenge. And I would come after you. Not now or in 5 years, but when you have a family - and I would take them out one by one.
Hey, I guess that's my right.

What is it with the people on this site?! No one smokes pot anymore???? In the Bay Area?! I agree -- drug tests are ridiculous and no indication of job performance, suitability, etc. And what happened to our privacy rights?

Well you can thank Margret Dole when she was secretary of energy under Ronald Reagan in 1985 for the invasion of your privacy. She mandated Drug testing for the energy sector and then all employers got on the band wagon in the name of increased productivity and decreased absenteeism.

I think many are losing sight of the invasion of privacy and all of the issues. If you have a major headache and your wife gives you one of her prescription pain pills and you get a random test the next day, for instance. Or the fact that you can smoke marijuana during the weekend and be fine and dandy by Monday, unless your tested. I worked at one place that drug tested randomly and EVERYONE RAN towars the liquor/beer store as soon as the clocked out, and came to work with severe hangovers, yes thts much better and safer (sarcasm). Our own congressman and senators voted against themselves being tested for drugs. Wake up America this is a privacy violation we should all be concerned about. Testing is fine if they only test for whats in your system during work. Not something that was there last week. And, ACID is something they do not test for (too exspensive), and the harder stuff leaves your system much sooner. Many school age children turn to them for that reason.

I can't believe that people are still so against pot. I mean, alcohol is legal and it has killed more people, broken up more families, and is far more addictive than pot. So rally at the beer store and leave the poor girl to puff her joint. It's not like she's doing it AT work!!

so if you attend a willy nelson concert...or visit a family member who smokes...you will be exposed to reefer smoke, and thus it will be in your system,,,according to the nurse at work (who looks the other way when it comes to positive pot screenings) god bless her..the test will show positive...meaning,,,not only can your employer tell you what to do when not at work,,,but they can dictate who you hang with and where you go..anyone who thinks this is justified in any way is misinformed...like ben franklin said..."anyone who gives up liberty for security deserves neither"

Pre employment testing is unfair and invasive. There is nothing wrong with something that grows naturally out of the earth. I would much rather have people smoking pot in their living rooms than dyieng and fighting in wars. Smoke pot, relax, and be kind to each other looking beyond just what we can do for each other but who we are as people to each other. The employment world forgets that quickly.

I aggree, corporate america is fucking stupid when it come to drug screening. I am starting to believe that the companies are not even concerned about hiring good employees.I think that the companies are so greedy that they dont care one way or the other. The only thing that the company's care about are keeping their insurance company's happy. The insurance company are the root of the problem. Insuance company have the purest scam in the world. They can always find ways to tax people or corporations more money like if the company does not have some sort of drug policy, that company will pay a higher premium.

LOSERS!!!!! You're telling me that it is fair that a crackhead, meth addict, cokehead, and alcoholic can get a job if they stay sober for three days, but if you smoke a little weed, you can't. Who the hell are you people on the other side? Get a life and smoke a couple joints.

So much for clarity and mutual disclosure. I recently got similarly messed around where I worked for 5 years. They cancelled my benefits and then told me a month later when it was too late for me to take over the policy. And all they went on about all the time was how everyone should be clear about their intentions, honesty, integrity, etc. Not a drug issue, but similar control issues! Notice I said "worked". I've moved onward and upward. Good luck.
