Drug prevention programs hurt more than they help...    Back to the homepage

In school people come into the class room and interrupt the normal learning environment to put emphasis on drug abuse. They make it fun to learn about. They tell you about all the different types of drugs and their common street names, some programs even show what certain drugs look like. They tell you how the drugs are made and distributed and even how to use them. They tell you about the possible health risks thinking that this is going to be the key point in prevention, but then they also tell you about the more immediate effects of using drugs. They describe hallucinations and the ultimate relaxation. Lets face it drugs make you feel good! Thats why people do them& To me there is a stronger chance of the adolescent feeling more comfortable with experimentation after all of this knowledge is in their head. It triggers curiosity. If they are trying to fit in and they know the drug lingo (from drug prevention programs teaching) it is going to be easier for them to fit in to an abusing crowd. In my opinion, it is no the schools responsibility to show kids what drugs look like and how they are used. They shouldnt hide the answers if questions are asked, but take some emphasis off of the drug issue please. A less direct approach would be, in my opinion 100% more effective! I dont doubt that addressing drugs and teaching the risks is important but I think half of what is taught hurts more than it helps. Making kids feel comfortable in their own skin and building self responsibility and respect (however that needs to be done) vs. Filling their heads with drug trivia& What do you think is more effective?
