Don't Duck and Cover during the BIG ONE    Back to the homepage
Views: 1362 Report
Do you remember being taught in grammar school, to "duck" under your desk and take "cover" during an earthquake? Well, this could get you killed! This is not a joke. I just read a report by a rescue guru who works for the government saying that when buildings collapse, the weight of the ceilings falling upon the objects or furniture crushes these objects and thus, you, if you are underneath them. Because these objects absorb the falling debris, a space or void is left next to them. He calls this space the "triangle of life". The larger the object, the stronger, and the less it will compact. In other words if you "duck and cover" under a desk, door jam, or large object, you are likely to be crushed to death. He advises that if you are in bed when the big one hits, just roll out of bed unto the floor and the area right around the bed will be protected. If you are in a car, get out and crawl into the fetal position right next to your car. Once again, the car will absorb the falling structure and the area right around the car will be that "triangle of life" that he refers too. Why hasn't this lifesaving information been more highly publicized ? We should pass this information to as many people as we can!

noadvertising (9/29): This was circulated on the internet about a year ago and a friend of mine checked with the Engineering and Security departments at the community college where she works. It seems it was authored by a man based upon a study in Turkey, where the architecture and building codes are much different than in the U.S. The conclusion was that the standard "duck and cover" remains the safest means of protecting oneself during potential building collapses in the U.S. (report)

cstraw (9/28): interesting...I agree. Americanredcross.org still has info. on there that says you should still duck and cover. Then again, if you run outside, you could always be hit by a telephone pole. (report)
