Disability Problems at local Safeway store    Back to the homepage
Views: 1503 Report
Yesterday, 2-03-07, I visited my local Safeway grocery store, which I've shopped at for 11 years, for a light shopping trip. Being unable to walk well due to my MS, I opted to use the electic cart they have available for diabled persons. What a humiliating and scary experience this was! The cart would go forward with a loud putt like a train but when stopped briefly and then restarted would grind and not want to move forward so you would have to rock it while sitting (which was difficult to do being disabled) to just get it moving again. Sometime later a Manager asked me if he could help me find something and I felt I needed to tell this person about the condition of this cart. He told me I should fill out a complaint card stating my complaint and that he had heard complaints about this cart before. I felt this was ridiculous! First, they should have a cart which is in working condition to assist the disabled with what is needed to shop. Second the manager should try to take care of the problem not just have you fill out a complaint card. Anyway while I checked out I did fill out a complaint card which the cashier had a problem finding and didn't seem to understand my frustration with the comedy of errors/events and the whole situation. The diabled along with other cutomers should be given good customer service to avoid inadequecies while shopping. Finally, this event was exhausting mentally and physically leaving me with the thought I should have just stayed home and not go to the store and maybe sent a friend. This is sad. Leaving Safeway humiliated and scared of the equipment; I will not be returning to Safeway but will do my shopping at King Soopers where I know there carts work and are safe; and customer service does work with you to help your shopping experience to be easier.

Anonymous (4/6): Problem is that Safeway employees are required to be nice (whether they want to be or not) and Kings employees are just nasty. Take a Kings cart to Safeway and get the best of both worlds? Or have you thought of maybe Vitman Cottage -- they could also help you with nutrition and your MS. Good luck! (report)
Anonymous (4/2): I totally agree. My son, with numerous complaints, finally, got through to the corporate office. Success. Something finally was done. (report)
