Maybe there's more romance in the air at the San Diego Zoo? Something's going on, that's for sure, since their pair of pandas, Bai Yun and Gao Gao, have managed to produce three cubs in four years, a pace which is pretty hectic by human standards, let alone those of normally prudish pandas. Apparently, in the wild, pandas act like seventh-graders at a school dance -- keeping their distance, trying to be inconspicuous, and refusing to walk ten feet to interact with the opposite gender. Looks like the San Diego Zoo's been piping a lot of Barry White into the panda enclosure, though, since Bai Yun gave birth again about three months ago, making this the most successfully breeding pair of pandas anywhere outside of China. San Diego Zoo officials will be naming the baby panda in a ceremony on Monday, guaranteeing another media circus of cuteness. It's hard to fault, though, since even if you're not really swept away by pandas, since the ridiculous amount of revenue generated by gushing panda gawkers enables the San Diego Zoo to take very good care of the considerably less cute, less revenue-generating baby crocodiles, warthogs, python, fruit bats, what have you... So rock on, pandas.
