Crooked Employer Doesn't Pay    Back to the homepage
Views: 197 Report
Tim Hawkins, owner of E Sell It 4 U in Eden Prairie, MN, hired my boyfriend to post sale ads on EBay and Craigslist. I visited the store one afternoon not knowing what to expect. I walked in to a disorganized, thrown together garage sale set up in a strip mall. Many sale items were settled with dirt and dust. It smelled like somebody's basement in there. My boyfriend worked in 17.5 hours for Tim in two and a half days. In those two and a half days Tim neatly evaded answering any questions regarding payment for the job or filling out forms for tax purposes. Tim had my boyfirend lift and move a 50" t.v. by himself as he stood by and watched. He sent a chain saw home with my boyfriend asking him to fix it. My boyfriend was asked to rearrange heavy furniture within the store as well. Tim denied him bathroom and lunch breaks as well as use of any telephone. Tim promised on a Sunday morning that he would bring lunch back for my boyfriend and upon his return to the store, my boyfriend was told that the lunch was forgotten and there was no time to go get any food so he would have to wait until the end of his shift. That Sunday proved Tim to be even more abusive - verbally abusive. While posting sale ads on Craigslist, (the company's EBay account had been suspended due to poor reviews from customers) Tim continually looked over my boyfriend's shoulder suggesting changes that he wanted made in the ads. Tim commented, "are you stupid?" and, "What? Are you an idiot?" This was the straw that broke the camel's back. My boyfriend let Tim know that it wasn't going to work out. Tim asked him why, however, my boyfriend could see that Tim was incredibly angry. Tim commented to the effect that he had imagined good things from my boyfriend. Regardless of Tim's manipulative statement my boyfriend declined discussing why he was terminating his employment. Tim asked him to leave the store right away and my boyfriend complied.
